ADR-0140 The helm's second pass puts each reading on one line

Amends: ADR-0139

#Context

The helm card, read at full size against the displays it is modelled on, had three faults the components caused and a layout the card caused.

• The datum hung under the unit. ADR-0139 set it small under the unit, the way "Mag" sits under "°". In a stacked unit the first line lost its baseline, so "12.6 V" drew its V raised above the numeral, and in a narrow tile "142 nm at 12 kn" broke across two lines.
• The soft key strip hung past its row. Bezel set inline-size: 100% without border-box, so the strip was its padding and perimeter wider than the row it was given, and its last key stood 12px past the edge the keys are fitted to.
• An inset cell on a panel did not show in field-day. surface-inset resolves to the same value as surface-raised there and in interior-dark, the finding ADR-0135 made for the tape's track.

The layout was the card's: a 96px status bar, because a live demand reserves three times its mark's height for its pulse; half of every panel empty; and fewer readings than the references carry on a page.

#Decision

A reading is one line. The datum follows the unit on the numeral's baseline, "274° mag", and the numeral, unit and datum do not wrap. This amends ADR-0139's placement, not its rule: a figure still states its datum, and still small.

Bezel sizes its border box. The strip is the extent it is given, padding and perimeter included.

A StatusIndicator's gap grows with its mark. The gap was the tier's 4px at every rung, sized for the Ambient dot, so a Demanded octagon eight times as wide sat a hairline from its words. It is now three eighths of the mark and never less than the tier's gap: 12px beside the octagon.

The card gives the screen fixed rows that add to 600. A 44px status bar with the pages as tabs, the position, the fix and the clock; a 52px alarm banner while an alarm is live, which lets the demand's pulse overhang rather than grow the row; the page; and a 76px strip. Each page is a grid of Scopes around one primary gauge, with the secondary readings beside it. The housing gains an alarm lamp, lit and blinking while an alarm is live, and a light sensor.

#Rejected options

Keep the stacked datum and widen the tiles. It would have fixed the wrap and not the raised unit, which is the baseline, not the width.

Give the status bar the demand's full reserved height. It keeps the pulse inside the row. It lost because a quarter of an 8 inch screen would hold one line of text.

#Consequences

38 unthemed and 117 themed scenes moved on darwin-arm64, by at most 8e-5, and no verdict changed. Scene 77 moved for all three changes; every other scene that draws a status indicator above Ambient moved for its gap.

The card's colour stays on the readings. The screen is one ground, the theme's page, with no section boxed: sections are divided by rules, readings in a column by rules, and the selected alarm is marked by a bar at its leading edge. Hue appears only where a reading means something by it: a gauge in range, a caution, an alarm. An accent band on the status bar, a tinted alarm banner, a tinted ground and boxed panels were each tried and taken out.

The position is written with an apostrophe for minutes. The prime mark is outside the faces' subset, and tokens:verify refused it.
