Panel

A panel is a container that displays contextual content alongside the main page.

When to use

  • Detail about whatever is selected in the main view, kept alongside rather than on top.
  • Supporting content a reader will refer to while working, such as properties or a history.
  • Content that belongs to the page rather than to a moment, which is what separates it from a drawer.

When not to use

  • Primary content. If it is the main thing, it belongs in the main area.
  • A task with a beginning and an end. That is a drawer or a modal.
  • Somewhere to put whatever is left over. A panel with no subject becomes a junk drawer.

Guidance

Do

Title the panel with the kind of content inside it, and keep it to that one subject.

Don't

Do not title a panel Information. Everything is information, so the word does not say what is in it.

Intensity

What each of this component's grounds spends, measured against the ladder in both themes.

Substrate, Ambient and Marked are measured. Directed depends on what else is in the region, and Demanded is declared and rationed, so neither is a property this component carries by itself. See intensity.

Content

What to write, and what to leave out.

  • Title with the subject. Status, Properties, History.
  • One subject per panel. Two subjects want two panels.
