Pagination
Pagination splits a large amount of content across several pages.
When to use
- A long list people work through in order, such as search results or an archive.
- Content where people may want to come back to a particular page, which needs its own address.
- Anywhere the total matters, because pagination shows how much there is.
When not to use
- A feed people browse rather than work through. Loading more as people scroll suits that better.
- A short list that fits on one page.
- A list people are scanning for one item. Search or a filter is quicker than paging.
Guidance
Do
Show the total and the current page. Knowing there are eight pages helps people judge where page three sits.
Don't
Do not paginate a list this long. With forty pages, people need a filter or a search instead.
Intensity
How much attention each of this component's grounds uses, scored against the ladder in both themes.

What to write, and what to leave out.
- Name what is being paged in the label, as in Conversations rather than Pagination.
- Say the range somewhere near it when you can, as in 21 to 40 of 156.
