Inline dialog
An inline dialog is a pop-up container for small amounts of information.
When to use
- A short explanation tied to one control, longer than a tooltip but too small for a modal.
- Content that may contain a link or a button, which a tooltip cannot hold.
- Detail a reader asks for by clicking rather than stumbles into by hovering.
When not to use
- A plain label on an icon. That is a tooltip, which needs no click.
- A decision or a form. That is a modal.
- Anything essential, since it is closed by default and closes again on a stray click.
Guidance
Do
Working hours come from the team that owns this queue. Changing them here affects only this queue.
Answer one question in a couple of sentences. An inline dialog is opened on purpose, so it can afford words a tooltip cannot.
Don't
Working hours come from the team that owns this queue. Changing them here affects only this queue. To change them everywhere, open team settings, choose the team, open the schedule tab, and edit the hours there. Note that changes take effect at midnight in the team timezone, and that any queue with its own override keeps it until the override is removed.
Do not write a page inside a dialog that closes on a stray click. Link to the explanation instead.
Intensity
What each of this component's grounds spends, measured against the ladder in both themes.
| Appearance | Ground | Light | Dark |
|---|---|---|---|
| popup | surface-overlay | 0.000Substrate | 0.070Ambient |
Substrate, Ambient and Marked are measured. Directed depends on what else is in the region, and Demanded is declared and rationed, so neither is a property this component carries by itself. See intensity.
