Heading

A heading is a typography component used to display text in different sizes and formats.

When to use

  • Naming a section of a page, which is what gives the page an outline.
  • Anywhere a reader needs to find their part without reading everything.

When not to use

  • To make text bigger. A heading claims a place in the outline, and a stray one breaks it.
  • For a whole paragraph. A heading is a name, not a summary.
  • As a label on a control. That is a label.

Guidance

Do

Exceptions

Choose the level for the structure and the size for the look. A smaller subsection can still be the next level down.

Don't

Working hours

Exceptions

Do not skip levels to get a size. Jumping from h2 to h5 leaves holes in the outline that a screen reader reads as missing sections.

Content

What to write, and what to leave out.

  • Name the section in as few words as will do it.
  • Sentence case.
  • No full stop. A heading is a name, not a sentence.
